The Binzel Nutritional Program

Philip E. Binzel initiated the Binzel nutritional program. Binzel recommends an intake of vitamins, particularly A and C, proteolytic enzymes, pangamic acid and nitrilosides. This has to be supplemented by a diet rich in raw, non-refrigerated fruits and vegetables, and regular cleansing of the bowels. He stresses the toxic effects of animal proteins in the diet and their degenerative impact on the pancreatic enzymes.

Binzel said he began looking for alternatives to standard treatments in the 1970s after all his cancer patients died. He was attracted to studies performed by medical researchers in the 1950s that, he said, identified a group of naturally occurring substances in the body known as nitrilosides — also found in raspberries, strawberries and the seeds of other fruits such as apricots and apples — as key cancer preventers.

“Laetrile is nothing more than a concentrated form of nitrilosides,” he said. When ingested, nitriloside has merited recognition by maintaining non-toxic cyanide levels, and acting as a potential threat to the immune surveillance, thereby lessening the frequency of cancerous tumors. The most common clinical appearance of nitrilosides is as amygdalin (Laetrile) and in natural form in berries, apricot and peach kernels, grape seeds, blackberries, strawberries, bean sprouts, lima beans, macadamia nuts and other fruits.

Binzel remarked: “My biggest problem [at first] was understanding nutrition. In four years of medical school, one year of internship and one year of Family Practice residency, I had not even one lecture on nutrition.”

Studies seem to suggest that manganese, magnesium, selenium, Vitamin B, and Vitamin A help patients combat diseases better. The objective of the Binzel program is to increase the efficiency of the human immune system, and to discourage detrimental mechanisms from manifesting themselves.

The Binzel diet comprises fresh vegetables, fruits, grains, and vegetable proteins. The enzymes present in fresh non-citric fruits, such as apples, peaches and pears, and vegetables greatly contribute to good nutrition. Patients are urged to have lots of salads,
fruits, whole grain foods like pasta and brown bread. The diet discourages sugar, fat, and any thing that is animal or an animal by-product. This means abstinence from all kinds of meat, fish, eggs, and even dairy products, and stress is placed on a high fiber diet.

Dr. Binzel’s patients included a long list afflicted with cancer of the breast, colon, urinary bladder, stomach, bone, ovary, lung, uterus, brain, and malignant lymphoma, lymphatic leukemia, and malignant melanoma. Most were in advanced stages of suffering, and had undergone extensive chemotherapy and radiation.

It has been reported that all his patients, who followed his nutritional therapy displayed remarkable improvement.

Raw Food Diet

Dr Norman Wardhaugh’s Raw Food Diet

Norman Wardhaugh Walker (January 4, 1886—June 6, 1985) was an English-American businessman and pioneer in the field of vegetable juicing and nutrional health. He advocated the drinking of fresh raw vegetable and fruit juices, both to regain and to maintain one’s health. Based on his design, the Norwalk Hydraulic Press Juicer was developed. This juicer continues to be produced and sold today. Walker wrote several books on nutrition and healthy living. Norman Walker actually lived to be 99 years of age

Around 1919 Norman Walker moved to Long Beach, California. With a medical doctor, he opened a juice bar and offered home delivery service. By 1930, they had devised dozens of fresh juice formulas for specific conditions. Walker believed colon cleansing with fresh juices was the key to good health. Walker designed his own juicer, the Norwalk, in two parts — a grinder to slowly grind the vegetables and a press to extract the juice. When the San Francisco health department banned unpasteurized vegetable juices such as Walker’s, he began manufacturing his juice machine in Anaheim, California. He kept the plant going in spite of the steel shortage during World War II.

In the late 1940s, he moved to St. George, Utah, where he found an old cotton mill, ideal for his juice plant, but he was again hampered by local health department regulations. He sold his share of the factory to his business partner and started publication of his own health magazine, The New Health Movement Review. For several years, Walker ran a health ranch in Arizona. Eventually, he gave up the ranch to devote himself entirely to writing.

Walker was a daily practitioner of raw food eating and juicing until he died at the age of 99 years. He was both physically and mentally healthy and active up to the day of his death, when he peacefully died during his sleep one night at his home in Cottonwood, Yavapai County, Arizona.

Walker advocated a diet based solely on raw plants like vegetables, fruits and nuts. He considered cooked, baked or frozen food dead and therefore unhealthful, saying that “while such food can, and does, sustain life in the human system, it does so at the expense of progressively degenerating health, energy, and vitality.” As a strict vegan, he did not recommend eating meat, dairy products (with the exception of raw goat milk), fish or eggs; although, some of his recipes include egg yolks, cottage cheese, and Swiss cheese, as well as raw cream. His diet suggestions avoided such staple foods as bread, pasta and rice, and sugar.

Walker devoted large sections of many of his books to the description of the different organs of the human body, explaining how the digestive system and the various glands work. He considered a healthy colon the key to one’s health. He estimated that 80% of all disease begins in the colon. He wrote: “Every organ, gland and cell in the body is affected by the condition of the colon.”

According to Walker, the number one affliction underlying almost every ailment is constipation. In other words, it is “the primary cause of nearly every disturbance of the human system.” This is because the blood vessels lining the colon collect nutrients missed by the small intestine. In his book Pure and Simple Natural Weight Control, Walker explained, “If the feces in the colon have putrefied and fermented, any nutritional elements present in it would pass into the bloodstream as polluted products. What would otherwise be nutritional instead generates toxemia, a condition in which the blood contains poisonous products which are produced by the growth of pathogenic or disease-producing bacteria.” Pimples can be an indication of the presence of toxemia. Walker maintained that the Standard American Diet causes the colon to be filled with toxins that strain the eliminative channels and ultimately, the immune system.

Walker believed that dairy products especially had a deleterious effect on human health. He testified to the disappearance of many ailments upon the exclusion of dairy products. He explained that pathogenic organisms find an ideal breeding ground in the excess mucus that dairy products generate. He cited the following diseases as being aggravated or caused by mucus conditions in which dairy products are the major offender: undulant fever, colds, flu, bronchial troubles, tuberculosis, asthma, hay fever, sinus trouble, pneumonia and certain types of arthritis.

His writings reflect a wide interest in different aspects of health and nutrition; besides authoring eight books, he also produced three wall charts.

Norman’s work lives on in new juice advocates such as Jason Vale in the UK, otherwise known as The Juice Master, and Jay Kordich who popularized “juicing” in the United States with extensive television advertising in the 1990s.

Zen Macrobiotic Diet

Macrobiotics is based on the writings of a Japanese physician, Sagen Ishizuka (1850-1910). He cured himself of cancer by abandoning the refined diet of affluent Japan and reverting back to the unpurified Japanese diet of brown rice, soybeans, fish, miso soup, sea vegetables, and other traditional Oriental foods – the ancestral diet.

RECOMMENDED LIST: “The macrobiotic diet is a mainly vegetarian diet consisting of 50% whole cereal grains, 20 to 30% locally grown vegetables, small amounts of soups, beans and sea vegetables, white meat, fish and fruit in limited amounts. “

AVOID LIST: “Potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, asparagus, spinach, beets, zucchini, avocados, mayonnaise, tea, coffee, and red meat are to be avoided.”

Some proposed reasons why the macrobiotic diet helps some cancer patients:

¤ Improved sodium to potassium ratio
¤ Ability to change an acid (cancer) environment back toward alkaline (healthy)

Macrobiotic Diet
Michio Kushi established a macrobiotic center in Boston in 1978 and has gained a noteworthy following. Kushi has publicly encouraged cancer patients to continue with conventional care. This program includes cotton clothes, fresh air, and exercise.

Earlier in this century, Are Waerland became famous for a successful diet that consisted of sour milk and similar products, whole grains raw or only partly cooked as well as fruits and vegetables. There are still many active Waerland groups in Germany and Scandinavia.

Bircher-Benner advocated a similar lacto-vegetarian raw-food diet. He invented the by now famous but greatly deteriorated muesli. The macrobiotic diet based on cooked brown rice and only a minimum of raw food is very
different from all the other anti-cancer diets

“Although a relatively recent creation, the macrobiotic diet is based in large part on the yin-yang principle of balance, a fundamental component of ancient Chinese medicine. Yin and Yang are opposite forces believed to describe all components of life and the universe. Here the world view of balance is embodied in diet including the selection, preparation, and consumption of foods.”

“For treating and preventing cancers, diets are to be varied according to the “Yin” and “Yang” nature of the tumors.”

Anthony J. Sattilaro, MD, an anaesthesiologist at Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia has become a vocal proponent. He “attributes this diet as the reason he recovered from metastatic prostrate cancer.”

“According to Kushi, cancer is the result of a person’s behavior, largely due to improper diet but also to his or her thinking and lifestyle. Improper diet produces a “chronically toxic blood condition.” He considers cancer to be a natural mechanism that localizes the toxic condition and detoxifies the body. Kushi writes, “Of primary importance in dealing with cancer, then, is not to disturb this natural mechanism by taking out or destroying the cancer.’

The standard macrobiotic diet in cancer treatment is varied depending on the type of cancer. Kushi calls the conventional treatments of radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery ‘violent or artificial’ and ‘toxic and unnatural’. He says the recovery of cancer patients treated macrobiotically is hindered if they have undergone conventional treatments.

He states that compared with cancer patients treated only macrobiotically, conventionally treated patients who are then treated macrobiotically ‘often take longer to recover… and their recovery is often more complicated and difficult.’” (CA 1984)

To proponents, cancer is seen as a result of an unbalanced condition, by which the body attempts to localize toxins and thereby produce balance. Therefore, after “macrobiotic diagnosis,” specific dietary recommendations are made and implemented. The implication is that appropriate dietary treatment will resolve the cancerous state.

Dr. Moerman’s Diet

Dr Moermans Diet

Through the Studies of his own pigeons Dr Moerman discovered that his birds were less susceptible to cancer. It was already known to Dr Moerman that unlike rats and mice, pigeons could not be artificially induced for cancers. As a result he developed a special diet mainly based on essential nutrients.

Dr Moermans immune building diet brings the liver, kidney and other organs into a greater balance and in many cases reverses a cancer condition. It is not designed to kill cancer cells directly, but is designed to build various aspects of the immune system and build the collagen fibrils so that the cancer does not spread.

Dr. Moerman was a country medical doctor in Holland who fine tuned his diet over many years by treating both pigeons and then human patients who voluntarily went through his treatment plans. Like several other alternative cancer treatments, it was developed on a trial-and-error basis. It is amazing how these trial-and-error cancer treatments are so similar to treatments developed more recently that have far more scientific data behind them. His research covered about 50 years, from the early 1930s to his death in 1988.

Furthermore, Dr. Moerman had few, if any, of the notes and discoveries of others. If he had had access to these notes, and had access to a juicer, as only one example, he might have used a quart of carrot juice instead of vitamin A pills.

Dr Moermans DietLike many other alternative doctors, Dr Moerman considered that “cancer was [caused by] a malfunctioning of the immune system that manifested itself outwardly on the body’s weakest organ as a tumor.”

The cure rate for this diet is very high for non-terminal cases (i.e. roughly the same as orthodox medicine, but based on “total life,” not a 5-year cure rate), but it also cures about 50% of terminal cases. Since it is designed to build the immunity system and stop the spreading of cancer, its cure rate for advanced terminal patients is probably not very high, though I do not have that information broken out.

I quote from the book: “not every case of cancer can be cured with the Moerman Therapy: However, all forms of solid tumor cancer have responded to it…”

There are eight key nutrients in this diet:
1.) Vitamin A (requires Vitamin D as a catalyst),
2.) Vitamin B complex,
3.) Vitamin C,
4.) Vitamin E,
5.) Citric Acid,
6.) Iodine,
7.) Iron,
8.) Sulphur

In addition to these eight items, Dr. Moerman identified 17 symptoms of cancer, each of which can be addressed by one or more of the eight key nutrients.

The research on Vitamin C is well known (see Chapter 3 of my “War” eBook), but the research on Vitamin A is not as well known, unless you consider the many studies that show carrots have cancer-fighting abilities. However, it was shown by an Oxford University researcher that “Vitamin A could not only slow the growth of a cancer tumor, but that in some cases it could actually turn a malignant tumor into a benign tumor.”

In fact, five of these items are common among current alternative cancer treatments. The three exceptions are: iodine, iron and sulphur (e.g. MSM and/or DMSO). These three items are exceptional!! It is now known, for example, that research on MSM and/or DMSO on cancer has been suppressed for over 50 years!!

Iodine dosage availability has been suppressed by the FDA for many years. I have often wondered whether someone had secretly discovered that iodine had cancer-fighting qualities, and that perhaps that is the real reason the FDA suppressed its dosage availability.

The iron is most interesting. There is an “Iron Cancer Cure” developed by Austrian faith healer, R.A. Hoffmann. I have never seen this element in a standard alternative cancer treatment, though some of the foods that are known to treat cancer do have iron in them. However, a warning is in order. Too much iron in the blood can lead to heart attacks. This is a little known fact that has been ignored/suppressed by the medical community.

Truly, this man was exceptional and only lacked from a close association with other alternative cancer researchers of his time. Perhaps, given his independent discovery of the 3 extra nutrients, that was good thing.

His diet basically consists of most vegetables, most fruits, some whole grains, butter, some other dairy products, egg yokes (not egg whites), and some other items. The diet is designed to supplement the eight nutrient supplements. The diet is very strict in things that cannot be consumed (e.g. table salt, even iodized table salt, meat, etc. are not allowed).

The total diet is very detailed, and includes what foods can and cannot be eaten, supplement dosages, etc. The complete diet, along with recipes, can be seen in the book:

Since the book is out-of-print, I will put some of the comments and the details of the diet on this web site.

As Dr. Moerman discovered, small amounts of Vitamin A had little effect on stopping the growth of the tumors. “He found that the most effective dose of Vitamin A was as high as 50,000 I.U. daily, although he increased this dose to 100,000 I.U. in some severe cases.” (Page 11)

Nutrients

Here are the dosages of the eight key nutrients in this diet:

1) Vitamin A (requires Vitamin D as a catalyst) – 50,000 I.U. to a maximum of 100,000 I.U. daily – taken once a day in the morning – found in butter, carrots, cod-liver oil, low-fat milk, spinach and tomatoes

2) Vitamin B complex – 2 tablets, taken one tablet, two-times daily
Thiamine (B-1) found in brown rice, low-fat milk, wheat germ and yeast,
Riboflavin (B-2) found in egg yolks, green vegetables, low-fat milk and yeast,
Niacin (B-3) found in wheat germ and yeast,
Pantothenic Acid (B-5) found in broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, egg yolks and whole grains,
Pyridoxine (B-6) found in green vegetables, whole grain cereals and yeast,
Biotin (B-8) found in egg yolks, whole grain cereals and yeast,
Folic Acid (B-9) found in beets, endive, green cabbage and whole green peas
[Note: Do NOT forget Cobalamin (B-12), found in liver, kidney, meats, fish, dairy products, blue green algae, and eggs, most of which are not allowed on this diet!]

3) Vitamin C – 1,250 mg. to 10 grams daily – taken in several small dosages throughout the day because it cannot be stored by the body – “The patient should take the highest dose of Vitamin C that he or she can tolerate” – found in citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables

4) Vitamin E – 400 I.U. to 2,200 I.U. daily – also taken in several small dosages – “Important: Check with your doctor if you have low blood pressure.” – found in vegetable oils, wheat germ and whole grain cereals

5) Citric Acid – 3 tablespoon solution daily – one tablespoon, three times daily (Acidum citricum 10 to 15 g. with 300 g. aqua) – it is found in lemon juice

Note: He makes comments about Vitamin P in citrus fruits (i.e. citrin), which helps the blood to flow through the tiny blood vessels, niacin also does this (a B vitamin)

6) Iodine – 3 tablespoon solution daily – 1 tablespoon three times daily (Iodii spirit, 3%. Mix 1 to 3 drops in 300 g. water or red sour wine) – “This can be prepared using equal parts of the iodii spirit and the other liquid, depending on the severity of the case” – found in iodized salt, which is not allowed on this diet, thus it must be supplemented

7) Iron – 3 teaspoon solution daily – one teaspoon three times daily – undiluted solution sacharatis ferrici aromatic triplex – found in apricots, cherries, egg yolks, green leafy vegetables and raspberries

8.) Sulphur – 1 gram daily – 500 mg. twice daily – powder created sulphur depuratum 0.5 g. This powder can be mixed with butter and eaten. [Webmaster Note: I assume this can now be taken as MSM in even higher doses] – found in broccoli, Brussells sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and egg yolks

Foods and Drinks

The most important aspects of the diet are lemon juice and orange juice. While it is true that citrus fruits do contain some cancer-killing nutrients, based on the cure rates I have seen, the citrus fruits are not as good at killing cancer cells as are some of the other fruits, such as purple grapes, strawberries, red raspberries, etc. In any case, I present his diet.

Adults must eat one or two raw egg yolks daily, unless they have liver or gall bladder disease.

Adults and children must drink the juice of three lemons each day.

These are the only two requirements. Beyond that a person can eat the proportions of the allowed foods to their own desire.

Raw, organic vegetables are preferred.
To cook, lightly steam in water. Use no more than a pinch of sea salt in cooking water. Do not boil.

Soak all dried fruits in water for 24 hours, discard soaking liquid before eating

Gerson Therapy (Dr Max Gerson)

The Gerson Therapy has been and is still the most basic, the best recognized, the most complete, and the longest existing effective cancer treatment. Patients on the Gerson therapy also know that they have to stick very exactly to the treatment. Everything you must or must not do has a very important reason. The whole Gerson Therapy is aimed at detoxifying the body and putting lots of fresh nutrients into it. The Gerson therapy is not effective with cancer only. With the Gerson Therapy, patients have seen heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, lupus, colitis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, herniated disks and many other problems disappear. Some have seen Alzheimer’s disease improve if it’s not too advanced.

The Gerson Therapy was established more than seventy-five years ago by Dr. Max Gerson, and described in detail in his book A Cancer Therapy: Results of Fifty Cases and the Cure of Advanced Cancer. Dr. Gerson died in 1959.

Dr. Gerson gave seriously ill patients fresh juice every hour, freshly pressed, organic, free of poisons, rich in the best nutrients, minerals and enzymes. It is all described in Dr. Gerson’s book “A Cancer Therapy: Results of Fifty Cases and the Cure of Advanced Cancer “. “We give a fresh glass of juice every hour: five glasses of apple-carrot juice, three glasses of plain carrot juice and we give liver capsules with it, four glasses of juice from leafy type greens rich in chlorophyll, iron, nutrients, enzymes, everything the body has been lacking over the years.

Gerson Therapy: Excess protein in the diet is carcinogenic
Excess protein causes cancer. Especially when it is cooked. Doctors and nutritionists advise you that animal protein is needed for strength and tissue repair, but that is absolutely the worst advice you can get. Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that when any kind of flesh including red meat, poultry, pork and lamb was heated to 212 degrees, whether it was boiled, broiled, fried or baked, the protein in the meat CHANGED into toxic amides that do nothing in your body except provide you with carcinogens.

Cooked meat is strictly a carcinogen.  The latest research done at the University of California at Irvine, showed that children who eat as few as three hotdogs a week had 10 to 12 times higher incidence of leukemia and brain tumors. Sausages are perhaps the worst food. They are chemically treated, dyed and preserved. They have nitrates and nitrosamines.

Potassium versus sodium in the Gerson Therapy:
Gerson found that sodium stimulates tumor growth. It interferes with body function. According to Gerson you need high potassium and low sodium, the same ratio which can be found in fresh live foods. All processed foods contain reduced potassium and raised sodium. Sodium is necessary for tumor growth. The Gerson Therapy supplements the body with potassium.

Liver regeneration and the Gerson Therapy:
The liver is the most important organ in the body. It is the filtration system for detoxification. I have heard doctors say that if your liver functions up to 35%, you are all right, but when it drops below that, disease develops, whether it is diabetes, cancer, arthritis, lupus or anything else. By the time cancer or chronic disease develops, liver function is below 35%.

So when the tumor, the cancer, arthritis or other disease symptoms are gone, that doesn’t mean the body is cured. The body isn’t really restored until the liver goes back to its full activity of somewhere between 90 and 100%. We never really know how long it takes to get there, but we can estimate it takes at least 1 1/2 year or 2. If you go back to eating average food right away, the foods you used to eat, candies, ice cream, cheese and meat, the cancer will come back rather quickly because the liver is not able to deal with these things.

Flaxseed oil and the Gerson Therapy:
Dr. Gerson found, after observing for a long time, that patients, especially with cancer and also with heart disease, atherosclerosis and so on cannot handle oils and fats, and that is why his book says no oils. Yet he was very much aware that the body needs a certain amount of essential fatty acids and that after deprivation for a year or year and a half, until the tumors disappear, there is a lack of essential fatty acids in the Gerson diet.

Dr Gerson searched and searched and tried every kind of oil he could think of, everything from olive oil, sesame oil, safflower oil to sunflower oil. None of them were usable because in each case the tumors would regrow. Fats stimulate tumor growth. But after the book came out, he came across the work of Dr. Johanna Budwig in Germany who showed that one may use flaxseed oil and that it is well tolerated by cancer patients. It helps to stimulate the immune system, and kills the tumor tissue. He used two tablespoons of flaxseed oil per day – one at lunch and one at dinner, and after a month on the therapy, he cut it down to one tablespoon a day. He advised against cooking with oils. You can’t cook with flaxseed oil because if it is heated, it deteriorates and causes problems. So the flaxseed oil must only be used raw and cold.

In addition, Gerson prescribed hydrochloric acid with pepsin, pancreatin, high doses of Lugol’s solution for iodine together with freeze-dried thyroid, niacin, Royal Jelly, and injections of vitamin B12 with crude liver. In addition, raw liver juice was used for its high content of enzymes. Later, with increasing chemicalization of agriculture the liver juice was omitted while linseed/flax oil was belatedly added to the list of supplements.

Liver detoxification with frequent coffee enemas was another cornerstone of the Gerson Therapy; otherwise, patients with advanced cancer might die despite disappearing tumors. Some patients are also given castor-oil enemas and oral and/or rectal hydrogen peroxide and rectal ozone treatment. Forbidden foods include salt, oil, berries, nuts, drinking water, and all bottled, canned, refined, preserved, and processed foods. No aluminum utensils are used, and juices must be pressed.

Dr. Gerson stated:
“Cancer is not a single cellular problem; it is an accumulation of numerous damaging factors combined in deteriorating the whole metabolism, after the liver has been progressively impaired in its functions. This slow poisoning of the entire organism, a lowering of the electrical activity in vital organs, and the weakening of the liver, the prime organ of detoxification, creates a ‘cancerous body that is anergic”.

Gerson Therapy is based on the view that malignant growths result from metabolic dysfunction within cells. This was to be countered by diet and detoxification. Gerson felt that, in order to be healed, the body needed to be ‘detoxified’ with agents that rendered it hypersensitive to abnormal substances (including bacilli and cancer cells), which the body will then eliminate. The more malignant the cells, the more effective the therapy. The clinic claims to “cure half of the patients who have a month to live, and 90% of patients with any early cancer.

During the Gerson treatment, the body is flooded with nutrients, oxidizing enzymes, and potassium. No added salt or fats other than flaxseed oil are allowed. Freshly pressed organic fruit and vegetable juices are given hourly. Coffee enemas are administered several times daily. As tumors die, the mass of dead cells are absorbed. They flood the bloodstream. Without proper detoxification, poisons accumulate, and patients, even those whose cancer has been eradicated, will die. Coffee enemas aid in detoxification and decrease pain.

Gerson believed our health begins with the quality of the soil in which our food is grown. “Our soil must be normal, no artificial fertilizers should be used, no poisons, no sprays which go into the soil and poison it. Whatever grows on a poisoned soil carries poison, too. And that is our food, our fruit and vegetables. I am convinced that the soil is our external metabolism. It is not really far removed from our bodies. We depend on it. But our modern food, the “normal” food people eat is bottled, poisoned, canned, color added, powdered, frozen, dipped in acids, sprayed-no longer normal. We no longer have living, normal food, our food and drink is a mass of dead, poisoned material, and one cannot cure very sick people by adding poisons to their systems.”

Flaxseed Oil & Cottage Cheese Diet

Dr Joanna Budwig: Flaxseed Oil & Cottage Cheese Diet

The basis of Dr. Budwig’s program is simply the use of flaxseed oil blended with low fat cottage cheese (FOCC).
Dr. Budwig states in her book, Flax Oil As a True Aid Against Arthritis Heart Infarction Cancer and Other Diseases: “I often take very sick cancer patients away from hospital where they are said to have only a few days left to live, or perhaps only a few hours.

This is mostly accompanied by very good results…in the hospital it was said that they could no longer urinate or produce bowel movements. They suffered from dry coughing without being able to bring up any mucous. Everything was blocked. It greatly encourages them when suddenly the fats with their wealth of electrons, start reactivating the vital functions and the patient immediately begins to feel better.”

After three decades of research Dr. Budwig, a six-time Nobel Prize nominee, found that the blood of seriously ill cancer patients was always, without exception, deficient in certain important essential ingredients such as phosphatides and lipoproteins. (The blood of a healthy person always contains sufficient quantities of these essential ingredients. However, without these natural ingredients cancer cells grow wild and out of control.)

Dr Joanna Budwig DietBlood analysis showed a strange greenish-yellow substance in place of the healthy red oxygen carrying haemoglobin that belongs there. This explained why cancer patients weaken and become anemic. This startling discovery led Dr. Budwig to test her theory.

She found that when these natural ingredients were replaced over approximately a three month period, tumors gradually receded. The strange greenish elements in the blood were replaced with healthy red blood cells as the phosphatides and lipoproteins almost miraculously reappeared. Weakness and anemia disappeared and life energy was restored. In symptoms of cancer, liver dysfunction and diabetes were completely alleviated.

Dr. Budwig then discovered an all-natural way for people to replace those essential ingredients in their bodies. These two natural foods, organic flax seed oil & cottage cheese) must be eaten together to be effective since one triggers the properties of the other to be released.

Cottage Cheese and Flax Seed

In the mid 1950′s, Dr. Budwig began her long and meticulous research on the importance of essential fatty acids (linoleic and linolenic) in the diet. Her subsequent discoveries and announcements sparked mixed reactions. While the general public was eager for this information, German manufacturers of commercial dietary fats (margarine, hard shortening, vegetable oils) went to extremes to prevent her from publishing her findings.

Dr. Budwig preached against the use of what she calls “pseudo” fats. In order to extend the shelf life of their products, manufacturers use chemical processes that render their food products harmful to the body. These harmful fats go by a number of names, including “hydrogenated,” “partially hydrogenated” and even “polyunsaturated.”

The chemical processing of fats destroys the vital electron cloud within the fat. Once the electrons have been removed, these fats can no longer bind with oxygen, and they actually become a harmful substance deposited within the body. The heart, for instance, rejects these fats and they end up as inorganic fatty deposits on the heart muscle itself.

Chemically processed fats are not water-soluble when bound to protein. They end up blocking circulation, damage heart action, inhibit cell renewal, and impede the free flow of blood and lymph fluids. The bio-electrical action in these areas slows down and may become completely paralyzed. The entire organism shows a measurable loss of electrical energy which is replenished only by adding active lipids to the diet. These nutritional fats are vital.

Science has proven that fats play an important role in the functioning of the entire body. Fats (lipids) are vital for all growth processing, renewal of cells, brain and nerve functions, even for the sensory organs (eyes and ears), and for the body’s adjustment to heat, cold and quick temperature changes. Our energy resources are based on lipid metabolism. To function efficiently, cells require true polyunsaturated, live electron-rich lipids, present in abundance in raw flaxseed oil. True polyunsaturated fats greedily absorb proteins and oxygen and pump them through the system.

Lipids are only water-soluble and free-flowing when bound to protein; thus the importance of protein-rich cottage cheese. When high quality, electron-rich fats are combined with proteins, the electrons are protected until the body requires energy. This energy source is then fully and immediately available to the body on demand, as nature intended.

“What Dr. Johanna Budwig has demonstrated to my initial disbelief but lately, to my complete satisfaction in my practice is: CANCER IS EASILY CURABLE, the treatment is dietary/lifestyle, the response is immediate; the cancer cell is weak and vulnerable; the precise biochemical breakdown point was identified by her in 1951 and is specifically correctable, in vitro (test-tube) as well as in vivo (real)…” stated Dr. Roehm, an oncologist, in the Townsend Letter for Doctors, July 1990. Dr. Roehm further claimed: “… this diet is far and away the most successful anti-cancer diet in the world”.

General Rules
The patient has no nourishment on day #1 other than 250 ml (8.5oz) of Flax Oil with honey plus freshly squeezed fruit juices (no sugar added*). In the case of a very ill person, champagne may be added on the first day in place of juice and is taken with the Flax Oil and honey. Champagne is easily absorbable and has a serious purpose here.

1. Sugar Is Absolutely Forbidden. Grape juice may be added to sweeten any other freshly squeezed juices.
2. Other ‘forbiddens’ are:
• All animal fats.
• All Salad Oils (this included commercial mayonnaise)
• All Meats (chemicals & hormones)
• Butter
• Margarine
• Preserved Meats (the preservatives block metabolism even of Flax Oil)
3. Freshly squeezed vegetable juices are fine – carrot, celery, apple, and red beet.
4. Three times daily a warm tea is essential – peppermint, rose hips or grape tea -

Daily Plan:
* Before breakfast – a glass of Acidophilus milk or Sauerkraut juice is taken.
* Breakfast – Muesli (regular cereal) is overlaid with 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of Flax Oil and honey and fresh fruit according to season – berries, cherries, apricots, peaches, grated apple. Vary the flavor from day to day. Use any nuts except peanuts* Herbal teas as desired or black tea. A 4 oz (120g) serving of ‘The Spread’ (directions below). This is fine to eat ‘straight’ like a custard, or add it to other foods taken in the day as you will see.
* Morning tea (10am) – A glass of fresh carrot juice, apple, celery, or beet-apple juice is taken.
* Lunch – Raw salad with yoghurt-Flax Oil Mayonnaise (directions below).
* In addition to ‘greens’ salads, use grated turnips, carrots, kohlrabi, radishes, sauerkraut, or cauliflower. A fine powder of horseradish, chives, or parsley may be added for flavor.
* Cooked Meal Course – Steamed vegetables, potatoes, or such grains as rice, buckwheat, or millet may be served. To these add either ‘The Spread’ (See below) or ‘The Mayo’ (See below) – for flavor and to up your intake of Flax Oil. Also, mix ‘The Spread’ with potatoes for an especially hearty meal. Add caraway, chives, parsley, or other herbs.
* Dessert – Mix fresh fruit other than those used for breakfast with ‘The Spread’, this time (instead of honey), flavored using cream of lemon, vanilla, or berries.
* Afternoon Tea (4pm) – A small glass of natural wine (no preservatives) or champagne or fresh fruit juice with 1-2 tablespoons of honey-coated Flax Seeds.
* Supper – Have this early, at 6pm. Make a hot meal using buckwheat, oat or soy cakes. Grits from buckwheat are the very best and can be placed in a vegetable soup, or in a more solid form of cakes with herbal sauce. Sweet sauces & soups can always be given far more healing energy by adding ‘The Spread’. Only honey or grape juice can be used for sweeteners. NO white sugar (or brown*) Only freshly squeezed juices and NOT reconstituted juices (preservative danger) may be used. These must be completely natural.

How to prepare ‘The Spread’:

Place 250 ml (8.5 oz) flaxseed oil into a mixer bowl and add one pound (450 g) of 1% cottage cheese (i.e. low fat, for example Quark) and add 4 tablespoons (60 ml) of Honey.

Turn on the mixer and add just enough low fat milk or water to get the contents of the bowl to blend in together. In 5 minutes, a preparation of custard consistency results that has NO taste of the oil (and no oily ‘ring’ should be seen when you rinse out the bowl). Alternatively, you can use yoghurt instead of cottage cheese in proportions of 1 oz (30 g) of yoghurt to 1 tablespoon (15 ml) each of flaxseed oil and of honey and blend as above.

Note: When flaxseed oil is blended like this, it does not cause diarrhoea even when given in large amounts. It reacts chemically with the (sulphur) proteins of the cottage cheese, yoghurt, etc.

How to prepare ‘The Mayo’ (Mayonnaise):
1. Mix together 2 tablespoons (30 ml) flaxseed Oil, 2 tablespoons (30 ml) milk, and 2 tablespoons (30 ml) yoghurt.
2. Then add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of lemon juice (or apple cider vinegar) and add 1 teaspoon (2.5g) mustard plus some herbs such as marjoram or dill.
3. Next, add 2 or 3 slices of health food store pickles (no preservatives! – read label!) and a pinch of herbal salts.

Flaxseed oil is readily denatured by oxygen, heat, and light. That’s why it is used in paint. Rancid oil is bad for health, so oil MUST be carefully produced, packed under nitrogen in lightproof containers, refrigerated until used, used as fresh as possible, and stabilized with protein (The Spread, etc) promptly once the container is opened.

Flaxseeds may also be used. Seeds need only be cracked in a food blender, or they may be ground in a coffee grinder. One needs three times the amount of seeds to get the oil equivalent. Seeds are high in calories, so one may gain weight. The seeds are also high in soluble fibre, so blending with liquid tends to produce ever-hardening “jellies”. Fresh-cracked seed sprinkled on muesli & eaten promptly tastes great.

This therapy consists primarily of detoxification and consuming a wheat-grass drink several times each day.

Ann Wigmore pioneered and promoted wheat-grass juice after curing her own cancer with it in combination with an organic vegetarian diet. Together with Victoras Kulvinskas she formed the Hippocrates Health Institute in Boston, and branches and health farms using wheat grass juice quickly sprang up in many countries. It appears to be therapeutically more effective if a non-centrifugal juicer is used, possibly just a mincer with the juice pressed by hand.

If oxygen is considered to be a bullet to kill cancer cells, then wheatgrass could be thought of as a shotgun blast at treating cancer. The number of ways it deals with cancer is reported to be numerous. Firstly, it contains chlorophyll (it is often referred to as “liquid chlorophyll”, which has almost the same molecular structure as
hemoglobin. Chlorophyll increases hemoglobin production, meaning more oxygen gets to the cancer cells.

Wheatgrass Diet
“Wheat grass” is a variety of grass like barley, oats and rye, grown in fields across America. “Wheatgrass” refers to grass grown indoors in trays for approximately 10 days and is the kind that is squeezed into a fresh juice. The tray-grown grass is used primarily for therapeutic purposes. The 60+day old field grown grasses, available in dehydrated powder or tablets, are used primarily as nutritional supplements.

Wheatgrass juice, made from sprouted wheat berries, is said to be high in chlorophyll. Claims are that the juice “cleanses” the body, neutralizes toxins, slows the aging process, and prevents cancer.

The idea that wheatgrass can benefit serious disease sufferers was conceived by Ann Wigmore, a Boston area resident. Wigmore (1909-94) was born in Lithuania and raised by her grandmother who, Wigmore said, gave her an unwavering confidence in the healing power of nature.

Wigmore believed in astrology, and described herself (a Pisces) as a dreamer who saw life from the spiritual viewpoint to the neglect of the physical. Wigmore’s theory on the healing power of grasses was predicated upon the Biblical story of Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar who spent seven years, insane, living like a wild animal eating the grass of the fields. Because he recovered, Wigmore theorized that the grasses had cured his insanity. The common observation that dogs and cats nibble on grass, presumably when they feel ill, also strengthened Wigmore’s belief in the healing power of grasses.

Wigmore theorized that rotting food in the intestine forms toxins that circulate in the bloodstream (aka, the intestinal toxicity theory) and cause cancer. She taught that the life span of the wheatgrass juice was less than three hours so it had to be cut from growing plants, juiced and consumed fresh. She speculated that the enzymes found in raw wheatgrass were alive and could “detoxify” the body by oral ingestion and by enemas.

It was the chlorophyll in wheatgrass that enthused Wigmore. She called chlorophyll “the life blood of the planet.” Wigmore believed that cooking foods “killed” them because this deactivates enzymes. She held that the moment the “sacred” 7.4 acid-alkaline balance (the same as human blood) is “killed” that its effectiveness would be reduced.

The fact that grass-eating animals are not spared from cancer, despite their large intake of fresh chlorophyll, seems to have been lost on Wigmore. In fact, chlorophyll cannot “detoxify the body” since it is not absorbed. Although it is conceivable that enzymes present in rectally-administered wheatgrass juice could have chemical activity, there is no evidence that this is beneficial. In fact, when challenged legally, Wigmore backed away from healing claims stating that she merely had an “educational program” to teach people how to “cleanse” their bodies and make vegetable juices (she also offered for sale a variety of juicers and other “health” paraphernalia).

Wigmore wrote at least 15 books, established the Hippocrates Health Institute (c.1963) which later was renamed the Ann Wigmore Institute (AWI). Wigmore claimed to have a Doctor of Divinity (DD) from the College of Divine Metaphysics in Indianapolis She also listed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and a Doctor of Naturopathy (ND) degree at different times. None of her credentials appear to have been from accredited schools. Among other things, Wigmore also promoted “natural hygiene,” spiritual healing, zone therapy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, color therapy, and spot therapy. A number of “Living Foods” groups around the world espouse Wigmore’s teachings.

Popularized in the 1970s by Dr. Ann Wigmore and other natural food pioneers, tray-grown wheatgrass juice has become a familiar product in juice bars, natural food stores, and the homes of do-it-yourself juicers worldwide. The juice has been associated with many health benefits. However, many who purchase “fresh” wheatgrass juice don?t realize that it has not reached its full nutritional potential. It turns out that wheatgrass juice is up to 70% chlorophyll, which in chemical composition closely resembles hemoglobin. It is said to heal tissues, help purify the liver, improve blood sugar levels and help flush out accumulated toxins. The authors concluded that in humans, spirulina acts directly and indirectly on NK cells. This study suggests that spirulina’s immune-enhancing effects are persistent, as heightened immunity continued to be seen up to five weeks after the subjects stopped receiving spirulina.

“Researchers at the Osaka Institute of Public Health in Japan gave volunteers over forty years of age 50 mL of a spirulina extract and measured the activity in the blood of interferon gamma and natural killer cells. For one to two weeks following the participants’ ingestion of spirulina, the activity of these substances was found to increase, and this increased activity continued for twelve to twenty-four weeks.”

There have also been studies in India showing that spirulina reduces the tumor burden in experimental animals with various types of cancer. In mice with chemically induced stomach cancer, the tumor burden was reduced to half that of the control animals using high-dose spirulina treatment (500 mg/kg body weight). In skin cancer, the tumor burden was reduced to less than one quarter, even with low-dose treatment (250 mg/kg body weight).

Spirulina also shows potential for decreasing the adverse effects of both chemotherapy and radiation. Scientists in China have shown that a spirulina extract increased the level of white cells in the blood and of nucleated cells and DNA in the bone marrow of mice that had been subjected to chemotherapy and radiation. In dogs, the spirulina extract additionally increased the level of red blood cells. The authors concluded that spirulina “has chemo-protective and radio-protective capability, and may be a potential adjunct to cancer therapy.”

Human clinical studies from India have shown that spirulina could be an effective treatment for a precancerous condition called oral leukoplakia. Leukoplakia is characterized by the formation of white patches in the mouth that do not rub off. These often progress to oral cancer.

In the 1990s, a clinical study conducted among tobacco chewers in Kerala, India, demonstrated that spirulina could reverse oral leukoplakia in this population. Half of the patients received one gram per day of spirulina and the other half received a placebo.

There was a complete regression of lesions in 20 of 44 patients (45%) receiving spirulina as opposed to 3 of 43 (7%) in the placebo arm. These results were highly significant. Among those who had homogeneous lesions
(usually considered less malignant than non-homogeneous lesions), results were even more pronounced, with a complete regression in 16 of 28 subjects (57%). One year after discontinuing the spirulina supplements, 55% continued to be free of these growths. These promising results have probably never been adequately publicized or used.

Spirulina contains certain powerful photosensitizers called chlorins. Chlorins interact with red and infrared light to trigger a photodynamic effect, which could kill abnormal cells. It seems more than coincidental that the most prominent reports of benefit come from very sunny climes, such as Hawaii, Latin America, and India.

A 2004 study looked at the mechanism by which C-Phycocyanin in spirulina induced apoptosis in a human chronic myeloid leukemia cell line: “C-Phycocyanin (C-PC), the major light harvesting biliprotein from Spirulina platensis is of greater importance because of its various biological and pharmacological properties.

It is a water soluble, non-toxic fluorescent protein pigment with potent anti-oxidant, antiinflammatory and anti-cancer properties. In the present study the effect of highly purified C-PC was tested on growth and multiplication of human chronic myeloid leukemia cell line (K562). The results indicate significant decrease (49%) in the proliferation of K562 cells treated with 50 microM C-PC up to 48 h. Further studies involving fluorescence and electron microscope revealed characteristic apoptotic features like cell shrinkage, membrane blebbing and nuclear condensation. …The present study thus demonstrates that C-PC induces apoptosis in K562 cells by cytochrome c release from mitochondria into the cytosol, PARP cleavage and down regulation of Bcl-2.”

Even more suggestive of chlorins’ cancer-fighting ability is the fact that the photosensitizer used in Cytoluminescent Therapy (CLT) in Ireland is derived from spirulina. This “green” photosensitizer has proven highly effective in destroying tumors in patients exposed to specialized light sources and whole-body infrared therapy.

In the future, a combination of spirulina and light could become a standard method of preventing the formation of precancerous lesions and of cancer itself. Of course, the economic and social barriers to such a simple approach are formidable. If you doubt it, consider that it has now been known for years that as little as one gram of spirulina per day can prevent half the cases of leukoplakia, a condition that frequently progresses to head and neck cancer. Yet the reaction of the Western medical world to this revelation has been tepid in the extreme.

The National Cancer Institute’s statement on oral cancer does not breathe a word about this simple and inexpensive way to prevent oral cancers. Instead, it heartily recommends surgery and radiation to treat the disease after it has been allowed to form.

“For lesions of the oral cavity, surgery must adequately encompass all of the gross as well as the presumed microscopic extent of the disease…. With modern approaches, the surgeon can successfully ablate large posterior oral cavity tumors and with reconstructive methods can achieve satisfactory functional results.”

Spirulina is a blue-green microalgae that grows abundantly in either fresh or sea water. It is sold as a concentrated food supplement widely available in natural food stores. Most comes from Hawaii and is identified as Spirulina pacifica, which is actually a select strain of Spirulina platensis.

Among food supplements, spirulina stands out as an excellent dietary source of chlorophyll. This is because it is an aquatic plant that does not require thick cell walls containing indigestible cellulose. Spirulina’s cell walls are made of a chemical called a muramic polysaccharide that is easier to digest, and its chlorophyll is therefore more readily bioavailable than in nonaquatic plants.

According to a scientific review from Latin America, spirulina has a vast array of beneficial properties. At the study’s end, there was a significant increase in the production and cancer-killing ability of these subjects’ NK cells. When their NK cells were exposed to a bacterial product after treatment, production of interleukin-12 (IL-12), a measure of immune strength, was significantly increased in comparison to IL-12 production in NK cells without pre-exposure to spirulina.

What is a parasite?,  Dr Hulda Clark explains:

A parasite is an organism that lives off the host, the host being you or me. The parasites live a parallel life inside our bodies, feeding off either our own energy, our own cells or the food we eat, and even feeding off the health supplements we use.
In recent medical studies, it has been estimated that 85% of the North American adult population has at least one form of parasite living in their bodies. Some authorities feel that this figure may be as high as 95%.

The approximate sizes of microbes can be approximated by using the following rule of thumb:

VIRUSES are the smallest of all infectious agents, averaging about 100 nanometers (100 billionths of a meter) in length. They have so few genes and proteins of their own that in order to reproduce they need to commandeer the machinery of the cells they invade.
BACTERIA vary widely in size and shape, but tend to be at least 10 times larger than viruses, or at least 1 micrometer (1 millionth of a meter) long. They are single-cell organisms that reproduce independently.
SINGLE-CELL PARASITES tend to be at least 10 times larger than bacteria, or about .01 millimeter long.
MULTI CELLULAR PARASITES are so large they can usually be seen with the naked eye. Tapeworms, for instance, can reach a length of 6 meters (20 feet).

Food and water are the most common sources of parasite transmission. Since most of us eat three times a day and drink water frequently throughout the day, our exposure to these sources is constant. In fact, there is a whole set of diseases classified as ‘zoonoses’ (animal-transmitted diseases) in parasitology textbooks. Animals are major carriers of parasites, and most physicians, let alone the general public, are unaware of this fact. Experts have projected that of the 110 million pet dogs and cats in this country, over half may be infected with at least one or more different kinds of parasites. Considering these numbers, the potential for transmission of parasitic infection from animals to humans is extremely high.

The CDC estimates that the number of parasites present in the United States alone number in the thousands. These parasites are biochemically complex creatures in their life histories, development, reproductive cycles, nutritional requirements, and disease manifestation. They are categorized according to structure, shape, function, and reproductive ability. These include microscopic organisms (protozoa); roundworms, pinworms, and hookworms (nematoda); tapeworms (cestoda); and flukes (trematoda).

Protozoa

PROTOZOA
Making up approximately 70 percent of all parasites, protozoa are invisible to the naked eye. They are one-celled microscopic organisms, but don’t let their size fool you. Certain protoans, through their intensely rapid reproductive ability, can take over the intestinal tract of their host; and from there go on to other organs and tissues. Some feed on red blood cells. Some protozoa produce cysts – closed sacs in which they may be safely transported through food and water from one person to another. In the cyst state, protozoans are safe from destruction by human digestive juices. These one-celled ‘vampires’ can actually destroy the tissues of their hosts. According to experts, an estimated 7 million people across the U.S. have some form of protozoa living inside of them. Common protozoa include: Endolimax nana, Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, Cryptosporidum parvum, Blastocystis hominis, Trichomonas vaginalis, Toxoplasma gondii, Cyclospora cayetanensis, Cryptosporidium muris, Pneumocystis carinii, Plasmodium malariae, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium falciparum, Leishmania donovani, Leishmania tropica, and Leishmania braziliensis.

Nematode

NEMATODE
While the protozoans are only single-celled, nematode creatures are multi cellular. The adult worms multiply by producing eggs called ova or larvae. The eggs usually become infectious in soil or in an intermediate host before humans are infected. It is interesting to note that unless the worm infection is heavy, many individuals do not show signs of disease. While it may be unpleasant to consider, it is true that the human host can coexist quite comfortably with a few worms, unless they reproduce in great numbers and create organ obstruction. Experts claim that ‘some type of worm is already in the intestines of over 75 percent of the world’s population’. This is a frightening statement. Common nematode include: Roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides), Hookworm (Necator Americanus, Ancylostoma duodenal), Pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis), Roundworm (Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati), Heart worm (Dirofilaria immitis), Strongyloides (Stronglyoides stercoralis), Trichinella (Trichinella spiralis), Filaria (Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, Onchocerca volvulus, Loa loa, Mansonella streptocerca, Mansonella perstans, Mansonella ozzardi), and Anisakine larvae.

Cestoda

CESTODA
Among the oldest known parasites, tapeworms are considered humanity’s largest intestinal inhabitant. They each have a scolex (head) that attaches to the intestinal wall. As long as the head remains attached to the intestinal mucosa, a new worm can grow from it. Tapeworms do not contain digestive tracts but get their nourishment by absorbing partially digested substances from the host. They are whitish in color, flat, and ribbon-like, with a covering that is a transparent skin-like layer. Common cestoda include: Beef tapeworm (Taenia saginata), Pork tapeworm (Taenia solium), Fish tapeworm (Diphyllobothrium latum), and Dog tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum).

Trematode

TREMATODE
Trematode are leaf-shaped flatworms also known as flukes. They are parasitic during nearly all of their life-cycle forms. The cycle begins when larvae are released into freshwater by infected snails. The free-swimming larvae can then directly penetrate the skin of the human host or are ingested after encysting in or on various edible, vegetation, fish, or crustaceans. Common trematode include: Intestinal fluke (Fasciolopsis buski), Blood fluke (Schistosoma japonicum, Schistosoma mansoni) Schistosoma haematobium), Liver fluke (Clonorchis sinensis), Oriental lung fluke (Paragonimus westermani), and Sheep liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica).

The Cancer Treatment Diet


Many foods, especially fruits and vegetables, contain substances that help prevent the formation of cancers, or actively attack existing cancers. This seems to be one of the purposes of food, and is a part of the economy of nature. On the other hand, diets high in trans fat and sugar have been linked to a higher risk of colorectal cancer and other health problems. In the move from animal to vegetable fats, food manufacturers have found it necessary to hydrogenate vegetable oils in order to prevent them from going rancid. However, this process also results in the formation of trans fats, which are therefore present in most processed and fast food. Sugar is added to many foods to stimulate the taste buds, and make us want to eat more of that food.

For cancer prevention, a diet containing high quality fruits and vegetables, and low in processed and junk foods is essential. Ideally, fruit and vegetables should not only be free of herbicides, fungicides and pesticides etc., but should also be grown on soil that has not been depleted of natural minerals and nutrients. MAINSTREAM TREATMENTS ARE NOT THE ANSWER

Once you are doing everything you can to be healthy, then and only then is it worthwhile to focus on eliminating the cancer itself. This is because so many treatments recommended by the medical industry can weaken your immune system further (e.g. Chemotherapy). Indeed, research is already pretty clear that chemotherapy would make you sick even if you didn’t have cancer.

The top single herbs in North America, for example, would have to include bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) and chaparral (Larrea tridentata). The most widely used multi-herb mixtures in modern times have probably been Essiac and the Hoxsey formula.

A tiny fraction of plants that have been studied for anticancer properties have actually made it into modern clinical practice. This just means that very few active herbal ingredients have been discovered to kill tumors like synthetic chemotherapy drugs do. The longest-running use of so-called natural drugs entails isolating vincristine and vinblastine alkaloids from the Madagascar periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus). These highly toxic chemicals are used in treating certain kinds of leukemia, especially in children.

These comments point to the use of herbs historically as well as currently, in both mainstream and alternative medicine. What about other, non-herbal alternatives? This is where cancer treatments really get interesting.

NON-HERBAL CANCER TREATMENTS

Animal natural products, especially of marine organisms, include some of the most toxic natural chemotherapies yet discovered. These are not what I call alternatives, because they are under development to be used as isolated drugs, the same way as the periwinkle alkaloids are used.

Probably the most famous animal product among alternative treatments is shark cartilage. The widespread myth about sharks not getting cancer has often been used to support claims about shark cartilage for treating cancer. Sharks do get cancer. Research does, nevertheless, show that shark cartilage inhibits the growth of vascular tissue that feed tumors, thereby slowing tumor growth.
